CNIPA Head: design applications reach 709,000 in 2018 and high-quality development to be promoted in three aspects

On May 25-27, the 15th China (Wuxi) International Design Expo was held in Wuxi Taihu Int’l Expo Center. Shen Changyu, Commissioner of National Intellectual Property Administration of China (CNIPA) indicated at the opening ceremony that, in 2018, the design applications totaled 709,000 nationwide. In the future, the high-quality development of design is promoted from the aspects of enhanced creation and utilization, strengthened IPR protection and advanced international cooperation.

He revealed that China is negotiating with WIPO for its accession to the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs. It will help Chinese enterprises more easily obtain design protection in other countries and make items created, designed and made in China go beyond the border and become global.

Shen introduced that with the establishment of IPR system, China has embarked on the cause of design protection. “Over the short three decades, China’s design applications have increased from over 600 in 1985 to 709,000 in 2018, which fully manifests China’s vigor in design innovation and supports the economic and social development, in particular the manufacturing development,” said Shen.

Shen also said that while the number of applications is increasing, the design protection system is also improving. As for the new measures taken for design, first, the design creation and utilization is to be vigorously promoted; second, the efforts on design protection is maintained to spur the creation vigor; third, the international cooperation on design is to be actively advanced.
