China–Africa High-level Workshop on IPR System and Policy held in Guangzhou

Jointly hosted by China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the 2018 China-Africa High-level Workshop on IPR System and Policy was held in Guangzhou on November 11.

Shen Changyu, CNIPA Commissioner, Chen Liangxian, Vice Governor of Guangdong People’s Government, Denis Loukou Bohoussou, OAPI Director General and Chen Hongbin, Director of WIPO Office in China attended the opening ceremony and delivered remarks. Over 20 officials from OAPI and its members as well as some national IP offices of Africa also attended the meeting. In his remarks, Shen said that China has always attached great importance to the cooperation with African regional IP organizations and African countries. CNIPA is committed to enhancing the cooperation and communication with African regional IP organizations and national IP offices in Africa, which has effectively promoted the IP development of different countries and also that of worldwide IP causes and global economy.

Shen indicated that this workshop, as a key mean to deepen China-Africa IPR cooperation, aims to lay a solid foundation for the friendship and future practical cooperation between China and African countries by sharing the updates of China-Africa IPR cooperation and exchanging the IPR system and policies of both sides.

On behalf of Guangdong Government, Chen Liangxian congratulated the opening of the Workshop. He stated that Guangdong has maintained close ties with Africa in terms of personnel and economic exchanges. This year marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up and also the 5th anniversary of release of “Belt and Road” initiative. This workshop is not only an important measure to implement the “Belt and Road” initiative, but also an important platform for China and Africa to enhance IPR exchange and cooperation.

Chen also said that Guangdong will take the opportunity of this workshop to strengthen communication and cooperation with Africa on IPR, deepen the study on IPR system and policies, so as to train senior IPR personnel familiar with international rules and achieve win-win cooperation.
